Heerema wins second offshore wind contract in Taiwan

Heerema Marine Contractors has won another offshore wind contract in Taiwan, following the installation contract for the It concerns a contract for the 109.2 MW Changhua Windfarm Phase 1 project. 

This time the contract is for the 900MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms that are being developed by Danish offshore wind developer Ørsted.

The Greater Changhua offshore wind projects consist of four sites in the Taiwan Strait, from 35 km to 60 km off the coast of Changhua County, in the middle of Taiwan. Ørsted has obtained site exclusivity on the four offshore wind sites with a planned total generation capacity of 2.4 GW. April 2018, Taiwan awarded Ørsted the right to connect Changhua 1 and 2a to Taiwan’s power grid. In June 2018, Ørsted was awarded the right to build another 920MW offshore wind in Taiwan through its Changhua 2b and 4 sites.

The contract scope entails the transport and installation of 111 turbine foundations as well as the installation of two large offshore substations. Furthermore, Heerema will also be responsible for onshore marshalling services as well as the seabed preparations and scour protection.

The installation will be executed by Heerema’s fast sailing heavy lift vessel “Aegir”, that is already in the area for another project. The installation will take place in waters of 30-35 meters deep. Heerema will execute the offshore work on Greater Changhua 1 and 2a during 2021 and 2022, while complying with relevant local regulations in relation to supporting vessels and crews.
