Liander commits to procurement of GoOs from Borssele III and IV Wind Farm

Liander has signed a 10-year contract with Shell Energy Europe Ltd for the procurement of Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) from the Borssele III & IV Wind Farm wind farm. By doing so, the network operator is looking to offset its carbon emissions, caused mainly by grid losses during the transmission, by 11% to 14% over the coming years.

Every year, Liander consumes some 1,600 gigawatt hours of electrical energy, equal to the energy consumption of about 355,000 households in the Netherlands, to offset its grid losses. The procurement of GoOs enables the company to do this in a sustainable way. Currently Liander is able to offset the carbon emissions from about 40% of its grid losses in this way.

Shell Energy Europe Ltd is the off-taker for 50% of the power and associated GoOs from the Borssele III & IV Wind Farm which is being developed by the Blauwwind consortium comprising Partners Group, Royal Dutch Shell, Van Oord, Eneco and Diamond Generation Europe. By signing the 10-year contract, the company will offset the carbon emissions by additional 11% to 14% starting from 2021.

Liander is the network operator for energy network company Alliander. The reduction of grid losses by its network operator is part of Alliander’s aim to be climate-neutral by 2023. In addition, Alliander is also reducing its carbon emissions in numerous other ways, such as by developing energy-efficient locations, making its corporate fleet more sustainable and taking circularity measures.
