Municipality of Rotterdam to go green in 2020

The municipality of Rotterdam has pledged to use electricity from the renewable energy sources wind and solar only as of January 2020. For this purpose it has signed a 10-year contract with energy companies Greenchoice and Eneco.

It concerns the use of electricity for which the municipality is paying, such as buildings, public lighting and sewer pumping stations.

The municipality of Rotterdam strives to become forerunner in clean energy. The electricity contract provides an impuls to the city’s energy transition. Half of the electricity will be generated in Rotterdam. Eneco en Greenchoice will already start supplying electricity from new installations soon to answer to the growing demand for green power. New solar and wind farms will have to be installed.

The municipality also foresees an important rol for the energy companies to engage local citizens and companues in the energy transition in Rotterdam. Greenchoice, like Eneco, have agreed to support local generation, the engagement of local citizens and the sustainability of business parks. Source: Greenchoice
