SeaMade substation components underway to Vlissingen

Today the transition piece and J-tube cage for the first of two offshore substations for the 487 MW Belgian SeaMade Offshore Wind Farm were transported to the SIF terminal in Rotterdam. 

In Vlissingen, the components, together with the foundation, will be loaded onto GeoSea’s installation vessel ‘Innovation’ for transport to the Seamade construction site.

The SeaMade wind farm is located 40-50 km from Ostend and integrates the two wind sites Mermaid (235MW) and Seastar (252MW). Each site will have a substation installed which will collect electricity produced, convert it from 33 kV to 220 kV and export it into the Offshore Grid operated by Elia System Operator NV, the Belgian Transmission System Operator. ENGIE Fabricom, Tractebel, Smulders and Geosea are responsible for the full EPCI of the substations, including engineering, procurement, construction, transport, installation and commissioning.

In September the wind turbine foundation installation activities already started. This is also performed by the Innovation. In total, 58 Siemens turbines, type SG-8.0-167, of 8.4 MW will be installed, 28 at Mermaid and 28 at Seastar. The substation topsides and inter-array cables will be installed in spring of 2020 and the towers and nacelles will be mounted onto the foundations in the summer of 2020.

The wind farm is a project by SeaMade NV, a cooperation between Otary RS (70% stake), Electrabel (17.5%), and Eneco Wind Belgium SA (12.5%). When completed in 2020, the wind farm will be the largest in Belgium. It is also for now the last offshore wind farm to be built in the Belgian section of the North Sea. The new capacity will bring the total offshore wind capacity for Belgium to 2,262 MW.
